EAGLE OF THE WEEK

This beautiful tribute to fallen heroes was written by Mickey Olsen and Eric Livingston.

Keep Freedom Alive

Mickey Olsen & Eric Livingston © 2023

Verse:

It’s Nighttime down a country road
I see the Gold Star in the window
Means he sacrificed for you and me
And his name I do not know

In homes all across this great land
Folded flags and service photos
Pay homage to our sons and daughters
Our cherished fallen heroes

Chorus:

Keep freedom alive and remember them
The eagle stands watch over Arlington
A grateful Nation knows the price they paid And for Gold Star families we pray...
To keep freedom alive

Verse:

With raised hand, they swore the oath
To defend and protect us
Knowing some might not make it home ’Cause freedom is that precious
And from high above the battle space
No matter race, or gender,
They shed their blood for all of us
So let’s live free together

Chorus:

And keep freedom alive by remembering them
The eagle soars high over Arlington
We honor now the price they paid
And for those Gold Star families we pray... To keep freedom alive.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

In Awe: Rediscover Your Childlike Wonder to Unleash Inspiration, Meaning, and Joy by John O-Leary

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

The #1 bestselling author of On Fire shows us how to recapture and harness our childlike sense of wonder in order to become more engaged, successful, and fulfilled.

“Engaging . . . O’Leary encourages us to see the world through a child’s eyes.”

~Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie

There once was a time when we joyfully raised our hands to answer questions, connected easily with others, believed that anything was possible, and fearlessly jumped into new experiences. A time when we viewed each day not as something to endure, but as a marvelous gift to explore and savor—when we danced through our lives in aweof the ordinary moments and eager for the promise of tomorrow.

Unfortunately, that’s far from our experience today. Instead, we feel disconnected and jaded. Social media reminds us that we don’t measure up, and the mainstream media barrages us with constant negativity. Many of us find ourselves caught in a life of dogged responsibility and mind-numbing repetition. The daily struggle to earn a living has caused us to lose the sense of wonder with which we once greeted every day.

In his new book, bestselling author John O’Leary invites us to consider that it is possible to once again navigate the world as a child does. Identifying five senses children innately possess and that we’ve lost touch with as we age, O’Leary shares emotional, humorous, and inspirational stories intertwined with fascinating new research showing  how each of us can reclaim our childlike joy, and why doing so will change how we interact with the world.

In Awe reveals how we can regain that ability to see fresh insights, reach for new solutions, and live our best lives.

A BBQ ALLEGORY WITH FUN FAMILY CHARACTERS WE ALL HAVE IN COMMON

Once upon a time, in the kingdom of Suburbville, a grand tradition was observed every year - the "Holiday Weekend Family BBQ." This was no ordinary BBQ. It was an event that brought together all creatures - big and small, young and old, from Uncle Larry the Lion to Cousin Jerry the Jackrabbit.

The centerpiece of this grand occasion was the "Grill of Glory" - a formidable barbecue machine operated by none other than Dad the Dragon. With his fiery breath, Dad the Dragon could roast, sear, and singe like no other, and his burgers were the stuff of legend. However, the Grill of Glory had a reputation of its own, often testing Dad the Dragon's patience with its unpredictable flare-ups and smoky tantrums.

As the day arrived, Aunt Agnes the Anteater arrived first, predictably, because anteaters, with their long noses, have an uncanny ability to sniff out food from a mile away. She brought her infamous "Ants on a Log" dish, which, while popular among the ant-eater community, was often politely avoided by the rest of the family.

Then came Uncle Larry the Lion, always the life of the party, with his mane perfectly coiffed and his stories of his adventures in the corporate jungle ready to roar. Everyone chuckled and rolled their eyes as he told yet again the tale of how he outwitted the hyenas in the office.

Cousin Jerry the Jackrabbit arrived, always a little twitchy, hopping from one conversation to another, never able to sit still. He had an insatiable curiosity and a knack for spilling drinks with his overly animated gestures.

And let's not forget Grandma Gertrude the Tortoise, slow and steady, wise and witty. She could always be counted on to bring her famous slow-cooked baked beans and a healthy dose of wisdom to keep the lively crew in check.

As the sun set, the holiday BBQ was in full swing. Dad the Dragon was wrestling with the Grill of Glory, Uncle Larry was roaring with laughter, Cousin Jerry was hopping about, and Grandma Gertrude was sharing her pearls of wisdom while Aunt Agnes quietly nibbled on her ants.

In the midst of all this, little did they know, the ever-eccentric Cousin Eddie the Eagle had decided to make a grand entrance. He swooped down from the sky, making a beeline for the Grill of Glory. With a swift movement, he grabbed the last burger with his talons and soared away, leaving a trail of lettuce and a stunned Dad the Dragon behind.

The family erupted in laughter, turning the surprise into the highlight of the evening. It was, after all, a typical Holiday Weekend Family BBQ in the kingdom of Suburbville - chaotic, hilarious, and filled with love.

And so, they lived happily and humorously ever after, until the next BBQ. Because in Suburbville, there was always another BBQ, another story, another reason to come together and celebrate the ties that bind them!
